I’ve been thinking a lot about how uniquely San Francisco moves people around. The whole rhythm of the city feels different depending on whether you’re on a packed 38-Geary bus, waiting under the dome at Powell Street Station, or trying to catch a train after a Giants game down by Oracle Park.
What I love most is that transit here is never just transit — it’s a social map of the city. The morning crowd on the N Judah tells you one story, the late-night riders coming back through the Mission tell another, and the people transferring at Embarcadero are basically the connective tissue between neighborhoods. Even the frustrations are local: the hills, the fog, the odd block where the bus always seems to bunch up, the way a short trip can still feel like a small expedition.
What feels most “San Francisco” to you?
- Is there a route you actually enjoy riding, even when it’s crowded?
- Which station or stop feels like the real center of the city to you?
- Do you think the city’s transit culture is getting better, worse, or just different?
My own vote is for the stretch between downtown and the Sunset — it’s one of the clearest reminders that SF is really a city of neighborhoods, not just a skyline. I’d love to hear what other longtime riders, new residents, and bus-nerds think.
