I’ve been thinking a lot about how St. Johns has changed over the last several years, especially with the steady growth around County Road 210, Race Track Road, and the communities stretching out from Julington Creek toward Greenbriar Road. The houses are newer, the roads are busier, and the conveniences are better than they used to be—but I sometimes wonder what that means for the character of the place.
There are things I genuinely appreciate: more sidewalks in some neighborhoods, better access to shopping, and the fact that family life here feels very organized compared with some other parts of Florida. But I also miss the feeling that you could know everyone at the park, or that the drive from one end of the area to the other didn’t take planning. Growth has its benefits, but it also changes the rhythm of a community.
“St. Johns” can mean a lot of different things depending on whether you’re talking about the newer subdivisions off CR 210, the Julington Creek area, or the edges closer to the river.
So I’m asking neighbors: what do you think still makes St. Johns feel like St. Johns? Is it the schools, the parks, the shopping corridors, the river access, or just the people who chose to settle here in the first place? I’d especially love to hear from anyone who’s lived here through the big waves of development and can point to the places or habits that still feel unchanged.
